The NATIONAL CLIMATE EMERGENCY RALLY
in Hobart on Saturday 13th June 2009 was a great success, with
1200-1500 people out on Parliament Lawns at 12 noon (despite the rainy
weather) to stand up for a safe climate and be
part of the climate solution. People wore red to demonstrate the
urgency of the issue.
Our rally called on the Australian Government to commit to the following climate change policies:
* 40% cuts in Australia's greenhouse
gas emissions by 2020 (based on 1990 levels)
* The Protection of Australia's forests
* Green jobs not job cuts: 100%
renewable energy by 2020
* Global Climate Justice. Read below for more information about this rally, organised by CLIMATE ACTION HOBART.

About the Rally
On
Saturday June 13, Australians will be coming together in every capital
city and rallying for safe climate. Climate Action Hobart is inviting
all Tasmanians and Tasmanian families to join with us at 12 noon at
Parliament Lawns as we send a clear message to our Prime Minister and
Government that they need to take immediate action to reduce
Australia's greenhouse gas emissions and ensure a safe climate for us,
our kids and future generations.
Speakers on the day include:
* James Risbey - Climatologist and Contributing Author, IPCC Third Assessment Report
* John Todd - Director, Eco-Energy Options
* Christine Milne - Deputy Leader of the Australian Greens, Senator for
Tasmania and Spokesperson for Climate Change, Energy and Transport
Plus
more exciting speakers, community and sustainability stalls. If your
group would like to have a stall at this event, please contact
climateactionhobart@gmail.com
If you can volunteer on the day please arrive at Parliament Lawns at 11am.
Why are we rallying?
Our planet, all its people and all living things on it need us to unite and commit to real action on climate change. The Australian Government is not taking adequate measures to ensure a safe climate for us and future generations.
We need to stand together and ensure our Government commits to:
40% cuts in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020.
The
world's leading climate scientists are calling on developed countries
to immediately commit to reducing their emissions by at least 40% by
2020 (based on 1990 levels) to avoid dangerous climate change.
100% renewable energy by 2020
Australia
must shift to 100% renewable energy from wind, solar and other sources
in the next decade, Tasmania in particular is in an excellent position
to do this and we could be leading Australia.
Green collar jobs with a just transition for workers
We
can renew our economy by creating tens of thousands of 'green jobs' and
supporting workers to make the shift to sustainable industries.
A strong international agreement with climate justice for all
Australia
must take the lead in global climate talks - a 5-25% target is not
enough! Australia must agree to a 40% target if we are to ensure a safe
climate for our children. We must show the world we are serious about
doing our fair share and support developing countries, who are least
responsible for climate change and already suffering its effects.
Protecting Australia's forests
Forests
absorb carbon out of the atmosphere and store it safely in their
trunks, roots, branches, woody debris and soil. When these forests are
logged or burnt this carbon goes back into the atmosphere. Protecting
Australia's native forests and woodlands is vital to reducing
greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
The rallies are an
initiative of Australia's Climate Action Summit, where over 140
community climate groups came together in Canberra in February 2009 to
plan community action on climate change. There will be rallies in
Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane, Canberra and Hobart on the same
day.
Climate Action Hobart is organising this event as part of
the national climate movement.
This event is also supported by Environment Tasmania, Sustainable Living Tasmania and The Wilderness Society Tasmania.
Climate Action Hobart is a group of
individual Tasmanians who are dedicated to ensuring a safe climate for
all peoples and nature.
